English Riding

History of English Riding

English riding was developed in England and brought to America. It is thought to be 'proper' or 'traditional' type of riding. The rider controls every move the horse makes so comunication is very important. This is why the english saddle is so much different then the western saddle. Western saddles are a lot heavier, larger, and bulkier then the english saddle. For example, the wester saddle was made to be confortable because sometimes cowboys and cowgirls would spend hours or even days without dismounting. The western saddle also has a horn on the front of the saddle and a larger, deeper seat then the englsih saddle. The english saddle is light weight, sits close to the horses back, had a small seat without a horn, and the rider had to sit up straight and grip with their legs for ballance. The cloths for english riding are different, too. The western cloths were also made for confort, but as for the english, they emphasis on appearance and tend to be old fashioned, and formality is key when riding in an English competition.

Dressage The word dressage comes from a French term meaning 'training' and is considered 'clasical training.' It is also a very competitive sport in the horse world. It uses a lot of gymnastic movements which have been studied and developed for centuries. In the past dressage was only available to the royal, but now dressage has been devised into a competitive sport that everyone can enjoy.
